Be Alert | Numbers 22:1-12

What happens when the enemy cannot defeat us head-on? He adapts. That is the sobering and clarifying message drawn from Numbers 22, where we encounter the story of Balak and Balaam. As God's people settled opposite Jericho, fresh off back-to-back military victories, a neighboring king looked across the border and felt something crumble inside him. Not just fear, but a deep, body-level dread. And rather than face Israel in battle, he reached for a different weapon entirely: a hired voice, a prophet for profit, a man named Balaam whose lips could invoke the name of God without his heart ever belonging to Him. The spiritual lesson here cuts close to home. The enemy of our souls is not a one-trick adversary. He studies us, pivots, and returns with a new angle. When brute opposition fails, he sends voices. Smooth ones. Convincing ones. Ones that even quote scripture. This passage calls us to sharpen our discernment, to test what we hear against the full counsel of God's Word, and to recognize that not every voice speaking the name of the Lord is speaking on His behalf. We are invited to ask ourselves an honest question: are we more alert to the threats we can see, or to the subtle ones dressed in religious language?
